Leadership qualifications
 - Sea Guides and Sea Instructor Award

Professional recognition with Aust Canoeing Inc. or via Adventure Activity Standards  (AAS)

Why:  Globally, sea kayaking is one of the fastest developing nature based adventure activities with an increasing need for competent, well trained  and qualified leaders.  Client expectations are ever increasing in terms of the quality of the experiences, safety issues and professionalism.
Recent developments in Public Liability insurance and regulations and the recently introduced Adventure Activity Standards, mean that only suitably trained and qualified sea kayak instructors and guides will find work.

Meridian Kayak has demonstrated the highest standards in the delivery of instruction programs and offers opportunities for vocational training in the sea kayak industry. Our innovative training programs are designed to equip adventure leaders with the necessary skills and qualifications to secure employment in this exciting and growing industry.

Sea guides lead adventure activities and extended expeditions possibly into remote places and are responsible for the well being and welfare of their clients as well as achieving the activity goals.

Sea Instructors are charged with the responsibility of instructing students in a broad range of sea kayak skills and knowledge in order that they can safely undertake their own adventures.

Meridian Kayak offers a full range of innovative instruction programs to equip and qualify potential adventure leaders to the level of The Australian Canoeing Inc. Award scheme. These awards cover all the competencies required from personal paddling skills, safety and risk management to leadership, instructing, planning and management of programs.

3. Assessment

The aim of the assessment is to determine how much skill and knowledge a candidate has to offer rather than highlight any deficiencies.  Candidates are assessed in managing a complete kayaking activity from getting the participants to the activity through to closing and post activity maintenance.  In this way the assessment is "holistic" in that individual competencies are not assessed in isolation but as interacting with each other.  For the assessment to be valid, reliable , flexible and fair there is a lot of work expected of the candidate.  Prior to the assessment candidates will have completed a log of practical experience, an activity plan for a separate activity in addition to the activity being assessed.  During the assessment the candidate is expected to take charge of the activity and deal with unexpected and complicated scenarios as well as sit a written examination at the selected level.
